Papers, 1941-1999.

The main body of the collection consists of Walters' letters to his family written between April 1941 and January 1946. The letters include descriptions of his duties on domestic and overseas bases, impressions of the surroundings, and his opinions regarding politics during WW II. In 1999 Walters' widow, Marthana McWhir, assembled transcripts of these letters into the volume, "Letters from an American Soldier, 1941-1946." This item is stored as BV 3308. BV 3307 is Walters' yearbook from New York University. The collection also contains photographs of Walters (1941-1944), and printed material related to his overseas assignments.

Charles William Walters, born in Indianapolis, Indiana, graduated from Butler University in 1935 and attended the University of Chicago. He entered the United States Army in 1941, and was appointed to New York University's College of Engineering, Department of Meteorology, in late 1942. He became a lieutenant in the Army Air Corps in 1943 and was stationed in meteorology offices at air force bases in the United States before reporting for service in the South Pacific in late 1944.
